A2 - Basic

Level Description

At level A2, the participant can understand clear, simple language and express themselves simply about familiar topics related to themselves, their immediate surroundings, education, work, and social life. The participant can engage in simple, familiar interactive situations if the interlocutors adjust their language and are willing to help.

A2 Listening

The goal of the training is for the participant to understand common words and expressions about familiar topics related to themselves, their immediate surroundings, education, work, and social life when simple language is used in slow, clearly articulated speech.

The participant should be able to:

  • grasp the topic in short, simple conversations
  • understand simple information about a familiar topic with visual support, such as a presentation
  • understand the main content and some details in short, simple messages, instructions, and directions
  • grasp important information about familiar topics from short auditory and audiovisual clips, such as news broadcasts, if spoken slowly and clearly
  • understand some pronunciation and common dialect words and expressions encountered in daily life
  • use some simple listening strategies, such as inferring the meaning of concrete, everyday words from a simple context.

A2 Reading

The goal of the training is for the participant to be able to read and understand short, simple texts about familiar topics related to themselves, their immediate surroundings, education, work, and social life.

The participant should be able to:

  • search for, find, and understand specific, predictable information in simple, authentic texts, such as websites, brochures, advertisements, signs, and notices
  • read and understand simple messages, letters, emails, and posts on social media
  • read and understand short instructions that are simply formulated and preferably illustrated
  • read and understand the main points in short, simple news reports and simple, adapted academic texts
  • read and understand the main features in simple, composite texts that include very simple diagrams and tables
  • read and understand very simple literary texts
  • use some simple reading strategies, such as inferring the meaning of concrete, everyday words from a simple context.

A2 Writing

The goal of the training is for the participant to be able to use phrases and simple sentences to communicate in writing about familiar topics related to their personal, educational, and work situations.

The participant should be able to:

  • write simply about their background, experiences, interests, and future plans
  • note down some key points from, for example, a meeting or a simple presentation about a familiar topic
  • describe people, places, and activities in a simple way
  • write and respond simply to messages, invitations, suggestions, and congratulations, and write and comment on posts in digital communication in a simple way
  • write short and simple emails and personal letters
  • fill in information in the most common forms encountered in daily life, such as in digital services like online shopping, banking, registrations, and orders
  • present their own skills in a simple CV and in a digital form
  • express their own opinions on topics of personal interest in a simple way
  • convey the content of pictures and simple texts.

A2 Speaking

The goal of the training is for the participant to be able to use simple phrases and sentences to talk about familiar topics related to their life, education, and work. The participant should be able to engage in simple, familiar oral interactions in everyday life when the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

The participant should be able to:

  • talk simply about their background, skills, wishes, and plans for the future
  • describe and talk about people, objects, places, events, and activities in a simple way
  • give a short, simple, prepared presentation on a familiar topic, both with and without the use of digital tools
  • express their own needs, opinions, and feelings in everyday interaction situations in a simple way
  • engage in simple conversations about events, experiences, and practical activities in everyday interaction situations
  • answer simple questions about themselves in an interview situation
  • make and respond to invitations, suggestions, congratulations, and apologies, and use simple, common polite phrases
  • convey simple, concrete information from, for example, clear, straightforward messages and instructions
  • convey the content of pictures and simple oral information
  • cooperate on simple tasks by making suggestions, asking what others think, and requesting repetition or rephrasing
  • use simple strategies to initiate, maintain, and end a short conversation
  • use simple strategies to compensate for gaps in vocabulary, for example by using body language or words from other languages the participant knows.
