Norwegian question word order

Level 1: Neutral yes/no questions start with the verb

In a neutral direct yes/no question, the finite verb comes first. The finite verb is the verb marked for tense. A modal such as kan (can), skal (shall/will), or (must) can be the finite verb.

Part 1

Kommer

Finite verb first.

Part 2

bussen

Subject.

Part 3

snart?

The rest of the question.

Kommer bussen snart?

Kan Ingrid svømme?

Må jeg bestille bord?

Level 2: Question words that are not the subject

When hva (what), hvor (where), når (when), or a complete question phrase is not the subject, the finite verb follows that phrase and comes before the subject.

Part 1

Hvor

Question word or phrase.

Part 2

bor

Finite verb.

Part 3

du?

Subject and the rest.

Hvor bor du?

Hva leser Mina?

Hvilken bok leser Nora?

Hva skal vi lage til middag?

Several words can form a single first-position phrase. In Hvor mange språk snakker han? (“How many languages does he speak?”), hvor mange språk is one phrase.

Level 3: The question phrase can itself be the subject

The “question word + verb + subject” pattern does not apply when the question word or phrase already is the subject. The verb follows it directly, with no additional subject inserted.

Part 1

Hvem

Question word and subject.

Part 2

kommer

Finite verb.

Part 3

i kveld?

The rest of the question.

Hvem kommer i kveld?

Hva skjedde i går?

Hvilken buss går til sentrum?

Hvor mange elever deltar på kurset?

Compare Hvem ringer du? (“Who are you calling?”) and Hvem ringer? (“Who is calling?”). In the first,du is the subject and hvem the object. In the second, hvem is the subject.

Level 4: Ikke, modal verbs, and emphasis

With an unstressed pronoun, ikke normally follows the subject in a neutral question: Kan du ikke komme? (“Can’t you come?”). The sentence adverbs aldri(never) and alltid (always) follow the same pattern in these examples.

Kan du ikke komme i morgen?

Har hun aldri vært i Tromsø?

Kan jeg også bli med?

Spiser de alltid lunsj så tidlig?

With a name or full noun subject, Har ikke bussen kommet ennå? and Skal ikke Nora være med? are natural neutral orders in the contexts used by the game.

Level 5: Direct and indirect questions

An indirect question is embedded inside a larger sentence. In the embedded clause, the subject comes before the verb. Compare the direct question Når går bussen? with the embedded clause in Vet du når bussen går?

Part 1

Vet du

The direct outer question.

Part 2

når

Question word in the embedded clause.

Part 3

bussen

Subject before the verb.

Part 4

går?

Verb in the embedded clause.

Kan du si hvor toalettet er?

Vet hun om butikken er åpen?

Vet dere hvor vi skal møtes?

Vet du hvem som kommer?

Embedded yes/no questions can use om (if/whether) or hvorvidt (whether): Vet hun om butikken er åpen? When hvem is the subject of the embedded question, use som: Vet du hvem som kommer?
