Norwegian Dates and Ordinals

This guide teaches date expressions using ordinal numbers, weekdays, and months.

Level 1

Dates use ordinals

For dates, Norwegian uses ordinal words like første, andre, and syttende.

mai

2026

17. mai

syttende mai

the seventeenth of May

1.første
2.andre
3.tredje
31.trettiførste

A date uses an ordinal

Norwegian says which numbered day it is: første april (the first of April), not the cardinal en april.

Examples

første januar

January 1 / the first of January

syttende mai

May 17 / the seventeenth of May

Level 3

Weekday with date

A full date often adds the weekday and den before the ordinal.

mars

Tuesday, March 17

tirsdag den syttende mars

weekday + den + ordinal + month

Build the full spoken date

Use lowercase month names. A full date can use weekday + den + ordinal + month, for example tirsdag den tjueandre april.

Examples

tirsdag den tjueandre april

Tuesday, April 22
